Saturday Comes: A Novel of Love and Vodou by Carine Fabius
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I appreciate FirstReads giving me the opportunity to read and review this book
This was an awesome read. A coming of age story full of mystery and Voudoo. As a young girl Maya is forced to leave Haiti under horrible circumstances and makes her way to Miami in a rickity boat. The sole survivor she is found by a young boy and taken to live with Madame Mirta the local Voudoo priestess. Maya brings with her the pain and resentment of having to leave her family and first love behind because of the wealthy landowner that her mother works for. She grows up with all that anger in her heart and never able to let it go. Throw into this mix of emotion her love and talent for Voudoo, co-narrated by Baren Samedi, and it makes for a wonderful story. We see the complicated caste system of Haiti along with being intrduced to the ceremonies and Gods of the Voudoo religion which adds alot of flavor to the story. The characters themselves have a complexity that really brings them to life. As the story progresses we find that they are definitely more than they seem. I recommend this book to anyone that loves a good story, or a good mystery, that definitely has a twist. Loved this book!
