King of Bad

King of Bad

King of BadJeff Mean would rather set fires than follow rules or observe curfew. He wears his bad boy image like a favorite old hoodie; that is until he learns he has superpowers and is recruited by Super Villain Academy – where you learn to be good at being bad. In a school where one kid can evaporate all the water from your body and the girl you hang around with can perform psychic sex in your head, bad takes on a whole new meaning. Jeff wonders if he’s bad enough for SVA.

He may never find out. Classmates vilify him when he develops good manners. Then he’s kidnapped by those closest to him and left to wonder who is good and who is bad. His rescue is the climactic episode that balances good and evil in the super world. The catalyst – the girl he’s crushing on. A girlfriend and balancing the Supers is good, right? Or is it…bad?

This is a new series coming from the creator of the Zombie Fairytales.

Unpretty: An Unloved Ones Prequel #1Unpretty: An Unloved Ones Prequel #1 by Kevin Richey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

LOVED,LOVED,LOVED!!! This is an awesome read. Katherine is a young, very obese girl who has even outgrown the large women's store. But on her 16th birthday everything changes with a wish.

Katherine is such a powerful character. I love how we see the world from her point of view. We really feel for her and see how it is to be her. And I loved her best friend Sarah who is chubby but not as obese as Kathy. She is so supportive and everything a best friend should be. I hope that we get to see more of her. Her mother is bitter and not supportive or forthcoming with answers to her only daughter. Its a relationship that is difficult to understand and you can see why her daughter has issues.

This book pulls you in from the very beginning. Its very well written and really hard to put down. I hated to find that I had come to the end. I love the intriguing mystery of what is really going on with Katherine, and who she really is. Loved this one and can't wait to continue this series.

The Evil and The Fear

Hello people. Flora has kindly invited me to blog on “The Evil and the Fear” and its publication.

Getting “The Evil and the Fear” published was not easy. Even on the back of “Expect Civilian Casualties” and all the reviews/attention it generated. It seems having one book published does not make you hot property.

The publisher, Firedance Books, is prepared to look at work that is out of the safe zone of big publishers hit by recession – who often fall back on “safe sales”.
Firedance likes ground-breaking, not formulaic. But my telling the story of a psychotic 17 year old girl may have had even them fainting around the board table.
Writing the story certainly burned a few of my neurons out.
When writing “Expect Civilian Casualties”, I had to spend months in the head of Jason (the main character) in order to write his story.
Like an actor, a writer has to be the principle character, the main characters and the rest. I would walk downstairs and think, ‘how would Jason, at 17, walk down these... why? How would he switch a kettle on? (and, given Jason’s mind), how would he feel about kettles/electricity/kitchens – or even being in a house? He struggles with most of these, and has a particularly hard time with televisions and entering buildings.
However, in his own environment he’s breathtaking, oozing confidence and enthusiasm. The contrast was wonderful to work with.

So what was it like to be a 17 year old woman with serious problems? Being Beatha, (Pronounced ‘BAY-ah’) in “The Evil and the Fear...” was a wonderful roller-coaster ride. I spent months immersed in her mind. But, like a real person, she took over her character, told me what she did and how she felt about herself and the world... I merely recorded everything.
Oddly, it’s not her great struggle, or how she inspired people around her, that make me love Beatha. Instead, it’s the little things she did, lying on her bed and crying over a map, drawing on the hand of a friend, and that manic moment in which she scrambled the minds of two police officers who wanted a statement.
Take four ordinary people, put them in extraordinary situations and they’ll make a story for you.
James’s firework personality, his heroics, Mark’s gentle, but unshakable, loyalty, Ailie’s mischief and enthusiasm for life... characters are so real when you’re immersed in them.

Characters taking over a book? Oh yes.

I’m working with another writer on a collaborative three part SF series at the moment (samples on We intended it to be an action story aimed at men. However, the character Jeanette, trapped in an abusive marriage, struggling with rapid promotion as a fighter pilot, and trying to get her little girls through a war, stormed into the story and made it clear she was the main focus. How did that happen?
Who cares? the audience is enthusiastic and growing. Men and women alike going to WriterLot each week to see what happens next.

As some of you will know, writing is immersive, addictive and can take over your life. Getting your work published, however, is unbelievably hard. A tiny fraction of new writers find it easy through luck perhaps, but the rest of us must struggle for years to get noticed.

Hurray for Firedance – an adventurous publisher. A glance at, “Tales of the Shonri”, “The Walker’s Daughter”, “Out
of Nowhere”, “Stillness Dancing” etc, is a bit of a hint.
Firedance also seem to have read the market well – judging by the reviews on the books they publish.
They are pretty demanding of the writers too. We are expected to critique the other Firedance writers’ work, beta
read, structurally edit, copy edit, proof read... and keep up with social networking and current work from other publishers.
However, Firedance is totally committed to the author – and give unrivalled support. What other publisher helps a writer in the very beginnings of an idea? or puts so many readers and structural editors on the writer’s work? I’m sure there are a few – but being part of the Firedance stable is an inspiration in itself.

So what happens after the Evil and the Fear? Well, I have another YA, two fantasy and two post-apocalyptic books written and awaiting publication. That will probably take years. The SF series is most likely to go out first as it has such a following.
Christy and I have yet to write the third story, though we’ve planned it thoroughly. Two people working on one project is mind blowing – I recommend collaboration to any writers out there. We hope the book is a similarly exciting experience for the reader. Watch this space! :)

Freefall Cover Reveal

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000037_00025]
Title: Freefall

Author: Tess Oliver

Genre: New Adult

Book Description:

After leaving high school, with a hard won diploma and the title of most likely to break hearts, Alexander “Nix” Pierce has left his wild, out of control years mostly behind him. A small inheritance from his grandfather has given him the funds to open up his tattoo shop, Freefall, and he has started to pull his life together. Aside from trying to keep his best friend, Dray, from killing himself in the fight ring, and his slight obsession with a pin-up model he’s never met, Nix’s life is going smoothly . . . until Scotlyn James, the object of his obsession, walks into his shop.

Ever since a tragic accident killed her family and left her alone in the world, Scotlyn James hasn’t spoken one word. Up until now she didn’t care that she had no way of talking to people. Her awful aunt would never have listened, and Lincoln Hammond the arrogant, selfish man who pulled her from the streets of Los Angeles wouldn’t hear her words if she could speak. But when Lincoln insists she get a tattoo to cover up a scar on her side, Scotlyn meets the artist, Nix Pierce. And now she longs for her voice. Now she has found someone who will hear her.

I could see Nix swallow beneath the collar of his t-shirt. For what seemed like the hundredth time, he rearranged stuff on his tray, and it seemed he had a hard time looking at me.

I’d pushed it too far. I was being way to forward with him, but I couldn’t seem to stop myself. I was not practiced at flirting, and it seemed that I’d been reading his thoughts all wrong. In my state of distress from the car ride, I’d forgotten to take off my sweatshirt. Feeling like a fool for rubbing my foot so suggestively up his leg, I hopped off the table and walked over to the hook on the wall. Now I wanted to get this done and fast.

I unzipped my sweatshirt and slipped it off my shoulders. As I reached up to hang it on the hook, Nix’s stool slid across the floor, and before I could lower my hands, his arms snaked around my waist, and he pulled my back against his hard chest.

Rising SunRising Sun, Falling Star

Different eyes and skin
Mock me from the mirror’s light
Enemy am I.

Dec 7, 1941
Today my life changed forever . . . I am no longer considered American, but by shear heritage I am now the hated enemy . . .
The lives of Kenji and Aiko Onishi and their American-born children are about to unravel when the United States is thrust into war with Japan. Confronted by insurmountable prejudice and fear, the family is ripped from their California home without just cause by the American government and sent to an assembly center “for their own protection.”
Forced to live in deplorable circumstances, every aspect of their lives regulated and controlled, the Onishi’s freedoms are stripped from their grasp as they struggle to survive behind barbed wire. It isn’t long before the mind-numbing confinement and feelings of helplessness begin to pit the family against one another.
When sent to a relocation camp in the center of the Utah desert, they’re beset by ever increasing emotional and physical challenges, and Aiko is faced with her greatest yet: to mend the broken spirits of her family, or risk losing them forever.
Based on true and tragic events that transpired during World War II, Rising Sun, Falling Star is a heart-rending story of one family’s struggle to survive uncalculated loss and emotional destruction.

Zaremba or Love and the Rule of Law

Love and the Rule of Law

In Warsaw, a shy and high-minded polio victim lives a life of seclusion caring for her odd family until a chance encounter plunges her into the intrigues of dirty politics; Zaremba, a wealthy businessman, is about to be arrested on trumped-up charges and only she can save him. Swept along by events, Cordelia finds her feelings increasingly involved with a stranger for whom she is both rescuer and victim. When Zaremba disappears, Cordelia must overcome surveillance, corruption, the media, and mounting humiliations and difficulties to learn the truth.

Although set in Poland, this is a story that could happen anywhere, as young democracies struggle against the temptations of covert operations and older democracies sometimes lead them astray.

Michelle Granas was born in Alaska, but currently divides her time between Oregon and Poland. She has degrees in philosophy and comparative literature, but now works s a translator. Over the past dozen years she has translated for many of Poland's major politicians and writers, including short pieces for the Nobel Prize winner Lech Walesa and Nobel Prize nominee Ryszard Kapuscinski.

But it was at moments like these that she realized most sharply
that her mother was lost to her. It was an old tragedy, though, and now
it affected Cordelia not with the intense pain of its first appearance,
but only in that it made her feel more friendless, stretched her nerves
a little tighter. Since she was alone she wanted to be truly alone. And
her mother was talking, she had to answer.
“Why have they gone?”
“Who, Mom?”
“No one tells me anything.”
“What shall I tell you? I had a very strange proposal today.”
“Did you, dear?” her mother sounded almost as if she were
responding, but Cordelia knew it was only coincidental. Her mother
began to mutter something to herself. Cordelia made another effort to
distract her.

Zaremba wants me to – to enter into a civil contract with
him, what do you think? You like him, don’t you?”
“He’s a dog.”
“No, Mom, Hempseed is a dog.” Cordelia’s head began to hurt.
She glanced at her watch: 10:00. Her mother might be up for hours,
and she wanted so badly to go to bed. She reached for a book and
handed it to her mother, but her mother took it weakly and before long
put it angrily aside. “It’s garbage.”
“You’re probably right,” answered Cordelia wearily.
“It’s all garbage.” She gestured towards the bookshelves, but
that might have been only accidental. “It doesn’t help at all.”
“No.” It didn’t. That was true. There wasn’t a single book there
that Cordelia could reach down and that would help in her situation;
and yet, there were lines swimming up to consciousness: Milton, was it,
about virtue assailed by force and yet unhurt?
If this fail, the pillared firmament is rottenness,
And the earth’s base built on stubble.
Cordelia’s mother interrupted her thoughts. “You’re garbage
too.” She reached out and patted Cordelia on the shoulder.
Cordelia knew that her mother didn’t mean the words, had no
idea what she had said, meant, perhaps, something completely
different, if anything at all.

Author Bio:

Although I have always enjoyed writing, the dream to become a writer came when I read A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, in the sixth grade. My early works, not published, were in the form of children’s stories I would read to my two daughters. I divide my days between the real world and the ones I’ve created. My life and my characters keep me very busy in my Mid-Western scene, where I live with my husband, and my children (both human and furry).

iXEOS R copy

ixeos reb
Ixeos Rebellion

With rebel leader Darian free at last, the humans and outsiders on Ixeos must find a way to join forces and defeat the Firsts. The problem? All slaves are tracked with GPS, the Firsts are the only ones with power, and roving gangs hate the rebels just as much as they hate the aliens. As Darian and the outsiders from Earth travel the globe through the mysterious tunnels in Paris, they learn that the Firsts are preparing to launch another wave of biological warfare. With a transporter that will allow the aliens to target any city, anywhere on the planet, the rebels know they must stop them at all costs.

As things get more dangerous on Ixeos, the outsiders find that they're pushed to their limit. Will they fight for freedom, no matter the price?

The McClellands are enjoying a lazy summer vacation at the beach when they are lured from our world into Ixeos, an alternate Earth. Finding themselves lost in a maze of tunnels under Paris and surrounded by strangers, they discover that they have been brought to Ixeos for one purpose: to take the planet back from humanoid aliens who have claimed it. With the aid of the tunnels and a mysterious man named Landon, the teens travel the world seeking the key that will allow them to free Darian, the long-imprisoned rebel leader. But the aliens aren't the only problem on Ixeos -- the McClellands have to deal with brutal gangs, desperate junkies, and a world without power, where all the technology is owned by the aliens, and where most of the population has been killed or enslaved. The worst part? There's no way home.

Teaser:The Dark Gifts: Birthright by Willow Cross

Author Willow Cross has stopped by today with a teaser from her book The Dark Gifts: Birthright!

Another growl rumbled through her chest as she took a step forward and to the side. The man’s hands went up in front of him. “Now just calm down.” Still eyeing the door, he made a running break for it. She slammed it shut before he could make it out. Cat-like, she pounced. She saw nothing other than the red haze covering her vision. Hot, slightly bitter fluid poured down her gullet, squelching the burn. Dizzy with the nearly orgasmic feel of it, her jaw tightened and she felt her teeth sink deeper into his flesh. His shrieks could not block out the slurping-sucking sounds as she drank. Inwardly screaming at herself to stop, she had no control. Nothing would stop the darkness from draining every last drop of the delicious nectar. Within seconds, his cries of terror changed to barely audible pleas for mercy. “Don’t. You don’t have to. Please.” The door behind them splintered from the hinges and slammed into them. Flying backward, Liz lost her hold on the man and scrambled to her feet. The raven haired man from the night before stood between her and the prey. “Get out of my way,” she hissed.

For one-thousand years, Druid prophecies foretold of a young witch destined to alter the fate of both human and immortal alike. This witch-turned-vampire would be capable of harnessing the supernatural abilities of both and, in a bloody rise to power, would rule with unwavering control.

Unwillingly thrust into a world she never dreamed existed, Liz Markum is catapulted into an ancient war between rival vampire factions. She must choose between those she loves and the ever-present darkness attempting to devour her very soul. Only one question remains: Will Liz claim her birthright or surrender to the dark gift? One choice. One chance. Two destinies. You can find it on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and most online retail ebook stores. Print edition is available from Amazon and Createspace.
