Mortal Danger

Mortal Danger (Immortal Game, #1)Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

There were things I liked and things I didn't like about this read. Making it meh on the rating scale.

Edie is a girl that has been bullied for years. Her parents are nerdy and have been no help in the matter and Edie is at the end of her rope. She's done her research and is preparing to commit suicide when she is stopped by a gorgeous guy and made a Faustian offer that she can't refuse. A great premise that goes awry from there. Edie wishes to be made beautiful so that she can get back at the Teflon group at school. Wait....what? ..... Yep, beauty will be the answer to all her problems and turns out it is. Along with beauty she gained instant confidence and turns out she can overlook the transgressions of the bullies. (And actually what they did to her would have been a prosecutable offense.)

The love affair with stalker Kian is somewhat believable. After all, they share a bond of the knowledge of what is really going on. However, my feelings toward Kian are in a gray area. I'm not so sure I believe him. I think there may be more there than Edie realizes. Her instincts are screaming and her hormone induced feelings are not listening.

The world building is interesting, too bad the plot is somewhat ify. Too much has been left unexplained. We have two "companies" that are fighting over the world. But they aren't sure why and its not really the outcome of the game that its important. Ok.... so are they just bored? or is there some other point here. And then there are all these sideline players who are interfering but again we don't really know why. The rules of the game are what? Again, no one seems to know.

Overall, I rated it meh mainly because its really shallow. Beauty doesn't solve all your problems and it doesn't make someone being mean to you ok. The Faustian contract is interesting and the world building is unique although the plot needs work. I'm hoping that some of my questions are answered in the next book and give me hope that the series will get better.

The House of Hades

The House of Hades (The Heroes of Olympus, #4)The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wow! There is so much to say about this book. I was both pleased and a bit disappointed. How can that be you ask? I shall explain......

The story picks up right where the Mark of Athena left off. Percy and Annabeth are in Tartarus and the rest of the crew are on their way to the doors of death. The Greek and Roman camps back home are on the brink of war. The character development undoubtedly made this story, that is except for a few that seemed to have became undeveloped. The action back home at camp also takes a back seat as we only see what's happening in glimpses from dreams and in Piper's knife.

Frank undergoes quite a metamorphosis coming into his own as a hero finally. We learn quite a bit more about his heritage as well as his own powers and talents. Hazel as well learns she is more than what she has always believed. Leo has a detour on his own and grows quite a bit as a character. I felt his pain as things took a new course for him. Piper also becomes a stronger character as she takes on the baddies all by herself at one point. But the true revelations come from Nico. I certainly didn't see that coming but I applaud Rick Riordan for taking Nico in that direction. He revealed Nico's secret and really brought this character to life in the process. I felt his pain and insecurities from dealing with such a secret for so long alone. That really earned this book the fourth star.

Percy and Annabeth kinda went backwards in this book. I know they are in Tartarus and trying to keep from dying but Annabeth went from being a strong female character to a rather weak one. Her strategy developing abilities tend to go out the window and overall just seems more dependent on those she's with than the other way around. Percy doesn't grow any either. He's just the same old Percy and there's no real focus on his character. Maybe in the next book we will see more of what we tend to expect from these characters.

Overall I enjoyed this book about as well as the others before it. The humor was a bit off but it didn't detract too much from the story. I definitely look forward to the next. If you've read the ones before it you can't stop now, pick this one up and continue the quest.

Medusa's Desire

Medusa's Desire (Fate of Eros #1)Medusa's Desire by E.B. Black

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was an unusual take on the myth of Medusa and Perseus. We get a plausible background story of how Medusa came to be the monster she was. How her life as a human girl was filled with trials and how she was blamed for actions beyond her control and transformed by Athena. She later meets Perseus as he was sent to kill her and that's where the story takes a turn for the strange (as if it wasn't strange enough) Perseus and Medusa fall in love an go on a series of adventures.

Medusa was definitely the strongest character. She kept her humanity despite all that happened to her. Perseus and Andromeda on the other hand were weak. He couldn't have accomplished anything without Medusa and Andromeda was definitely a spoiled princess. However, it was the relationship between Perseus and Medusa that seemed so implausible. How could he not know what she really looked like? How could she be a vegetarian? That didn't seem natural at all.

The story itself was a roller coaster of emotions. Parts were dark and sad and others were passionate and loving. The ending itself was dark and menacing too but fitting in many ways. I don't think it could have ended differently. Overall, it was a fairly good read, and definitely for readers over 18. If you like a bit of dark erotica you might want to pick this one up.

Dark Waters

Dark Waters (Celtic Legacy, 1)Dark Waters by Shannon Mayer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a fun read with an original twist on the mythology aspect of it. The focus here was on Irish myths instead of more commonly seen Greek/Roman Gods. The family aspect of this read was also a bit unusual. We are introduced to two sisters that are very close. Quinn is the older sister that has practically raised her younger sister Ashling. Their mother has had little to do with them and their grandfather is in a mental institution, and even he has his favorite of the two.

As the story unfolds, Quinn quickly learns that her life is not what she has always believed it to be. The loss of her sister to the monsters that she never knew existed has opened her eyes and caused her to fight for those she loves. My biggest problem was understanding the family dynamics portrayed in this story. Its never really explained why their mother doesn't want them, or why their grandfather behaves the way he does towards them.

Overall, I enjoyed this read although it left me with a lot of questions. And some things were rather predictable, the ever present love triangle was no surprise. But I am intrigued as to where this story is going and I plan on reading the next book in this series.

The Year-God's Daughter

The Year-God's Daughter (The Child of the Erinyes, #1)The Year-God's Daughter by Rebecca Lochlann

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was an awesome read that I actually wanted to stretch to more than 4 stars but not quite 5. Set in ancient Greece, taking place mostly on the isle of Crete, we are drawn into this world as if we were there. Here, they worship the goddess Athene and is a matriarchal society. Every year a bull king is chosen and at the end of that year his blood sacrifice causes their prosperity to continue.

Review of Chonicles of M: Ammit

Chronicles of M: AmmitChronicles of M: Ammit by Nicholas Forristal

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a fun read! This is the second book in the Chronicles of M series and it picks up right where part one leaves off. Thomas and Samuel are trying to figure out how to exercise the demon from M. The story continues and we learn alot more history of Thomas and M and along with it comes many more questions. We lose some of the characters from part one (I hated to see Samuel leave, hope he comes back) and we meet some new ones (mortal and immortal). We also come to know a lot more about Dixie (she is so cool!)

This series melds science fiction and superheroes and thows in a bit of magic and mythology for the perfect balance of an awesome read. There are some definite twists and tangents that I didn't see coming and that just added to the action. And although this can be read without reading the first one, you will enjoy this series more if you read them both.

Overall, I loved it and recommend it for anyone that likes sci/fic and superheroes. This is a read full of cool characters and lots of action. Its one that I didn't want to put down once I started.

Mark of Athena

The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus, #3)The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the third installment in the Heroes of Olympus series, and altho I really enjoyed it I don't understand how people can rate it without having read it. It seems like that makes the overall rating misleading.

The Mark of Athena picks up immediately where The Son of Neptune left off. I wish that I had gone back and refreshed myself with what happened in the last book because so much carried over that I had forgotten about. Riordan does a good job of reminding you what happened that was important but some points I had forgotten about. It has been a year after all.

The Grimoire Trilogy

LichgatesLichgates by S. M. Boyce

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book for my honest review.

This was certainly an original story and that is one thing I look for in a good read. There were certainly influences from Narnia and LOTR but it was just that. Boyce has created a new world with new creatures, characters, and lands.

Raine -- The Lords of Satyr #2

Raine (The Lords of Satyr, #2)Raine by Elizabeth Amber

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Lords of Satyr series and it is just as good or better than the first one, Nicholas. As with the first one, this one is definitely not for just anyone. If you don't enjoy the strange and unusual then I suggest you look elsewhere. Personally, I love the strange and unusual and therefore I loved this one.

The Black God's War

The Black God's War (Splendor and Ruin, #1)The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I did really enjoy this book and I might even stretch it up to 4.5 stars. I had only a couple of minor issues but over all it was a good one, even tho it was a bit long.

This story seems drawn on Homer's Illiad. There is a great war and a pantheon of gods that took part. However, its not really clear for the reason behind the war. With the Illiad it was because of Helen of Troy with Rezzia and Powelon its not so clear.
