Beyond Control (Beyond #2)

Beyond Control (Beyond, #2)Beyond Control by Kit Rocha

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wow! A powerfully hot read to say the least. Love this series.

This is the second part in Kit Rocha's Beyond series and the focus is on the relationship between the leader of the O'Kane Gang, Dallas and his queen Lex. Their relationship is so much of a power struggle and it adds to the intensity of the story and their relationship. Lex is a very independent woman and Dallas loves power and control but he loves Lex more than life.

There is so much going on in this story apart from the really hot sex that happens everywhere with everybody. The world building has increased from the introduction in part one. We learn more about the political life of the sectors as well as their relationship with Eden, the city proper. We are introduced to the leaders of the other sectors as well as life among the masses.

Loved this one, although not as good as the first. The constant arguing between Dallas and Lex, although important to the story, got to be a put off for me. Can't wait to read the next and continue this series. Definitely only for those not faint of heart over 18.

Hidden Magic

When Jenny has the opportunity to spend the summer with her sister, a small slice of freedom is all she's really hoping for when she has the opportunity to spend the summer with her sister. Instead she finds something else altogether: electricity.
That's what Jenny feels when she looks at Arram. She knows he’s drawn to her too, but the mage-in-training does his best to hide it.
Stung, Jenny turns to Arram's former best friend, Jack. But Arram and Jack's rivalry is much darker than Jenny suspects, and so are Jack's intentions. Soon she's caught in a mystery of old murder, ancient prophecies, and magic hidden where no one has thought to look.
When Jenny uncovers a secret magic, she is offered two choices. Arram wants her to do the safe thing. Jack wants to show her the easy way out. Whatever Jenny decides, her life will irrevocably change.
Either way, freedom may be the one thing Jenny can never have.

Excerpt
Jack put his finger to his lips and motioned toward an empty bedroom across the hall. Not knowing what else to do, she went in, her heart thudding against her ribs. “Jack,” she whispered. “What are you doing here? How did you get in?”
“What? No welcome home kiss?” His voice was mocking.
Trying to keep her voice steady, she said, “So Arram was right. You do want to kidnap me after all.”
“Kidnap you?” Jack looked horrified. Underneath the horror though, Jenny could see that his eyes were sparkling with mischief. “I should have known Arram would fill your head with something stupid like that. No, you wonderful, impossible girl, I’m here to rescue you.”

Child of the Northern Spring

Child of the Northern SpringChild of the Northern Spring by Persia Woolley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a re-telling of the story of King Author and Guinevere told through the eyes of Guinevere. We meet Guinevere on the eve of her marriage to Author. She is a young girl who is unsure about the arranged marriage but with the urging of her father she decides to fulfill her duties instead of running from them. On the way, she reminisces about her childhood and when she first sees author.

I loved this book. I love that we are introduced to Guinevere as a young girl. We see sketches of her life as she grows up as well as wonderful descriptions of the country and way of life around her. So often in book of Authurian legend the focus is only on Author and that makes this a wonderful change of perspective. Without Guinevere the story of Author would not be complete. He would not be who he was without her.

The characters surrounding Guinevere were great as well. All of the major characters from the legend were included such as Merlin, Gwain, Morgan Le Fey, Morgause, and Nemue. All were wonderfully brought to life as well as Guinevere.

Don't begin this one thinking its a quick read as it is rather long. But it is well worth the time. If you enjoy historical fiction, Authurian legends in particular, this is one to pick up. I look forward to starting the next part.

Beyond Shame

Beyond Shame (Beyond, #1)Beyond Shame by Kit Rocha

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! There is so much going on in this story I hardly know where to start.

Set in the not so distant future, after solar storms have ravaged the earth. Society is split into different sections. In the city of Eden, all is pure and nothing that diverts from that is allowed. Noelle is the daughter of an affluent city official when she is found breaking the rules by drinking a little and fornicating with a boy she likes. She is then thrust out of the city and into Sector 4 that is ruled by the O'Kane gang. Noelle is then taken into the gang by Lex and Jasper and taught really how to live.

I love the characters in this book. Lex is a strong woman, so sure of herself. Jasper is Dallas O'Kane's right hand man and is also a really strong character. Noelle is young and inexperienced in life but as the story goes along she learns who she is and what she wants and under the tutelage of the gang she becomes a strong woman. She goes from thinking that all sex is dirty to understanding that what occurs between two or more consenting adults is not dirty. There is no shame in what happens between adults. Consent is the optimum word here. It should not be controlled by others in power who are not involved.

I loved this book. I loved the characters, I loved the pace of it, and the sex scenes were HOTTTT!!!!! and only added to the story. The story was not built around the scenes but quite the opposite. Definitely not for those under 18. Unlike 50 Shades of Gray, this book is well written and not about subjugating women. Instead the sexual situations were as much or more about the pleasure and power of women. They were loved and protected by the men in their lives and very much satisfied. Can't wait to read the next one.

Excerpt

Is that him? Is he back?

My legs jerked, kicking and twitching me around to face the sound. I managed to roll slightly, knocking against a soft, solid object at my feet. It grunted weakly, and immediately I recoiled as though I had been bitten. Squinting, I stared, willing my eyes to find light in the dark, but there was nothing.

The sound of the runner drew closer, as if they would trample me any moment. A dim, swaying light appeared through the trees, burning away the inky edges of the deep shadows. When light and sound were almost upon me, branches above me snapped, spraying me in a shower of dried pine needles and snow.

Bloodlines Book Blast

Matt Archer BloodlinesMatt Archer: Bloodlines

When seventeen-year-old Matt Archer set out on his last mission in the Australian Outback, he thought it would be like every other hunt.

Not even close.

After only two days on the ground, his best friend is possessed, a long-lost family member has returned and hidden truths have come to the surface. Add in a coven of witches bent on bringing about the end of the world and, well, this trip has started to suck. Badly.

As his power and strength continue to grow, so does Matt’s concern that he’s becoming more and more like the creatures he’s been charged to hunt: a monster.

Faced with some of his biggest challenges to date, Matt has to decide what he needs to protect most—his family, his team…or himself.

Matt Archer Legend 680x453Matt Archer: Legend

When Matt Archer was fourteen, he was chosen—by a magic, spirit-inhabited knife—to hunt monsters with a special paranormal division of the Army. When he was fifteen, he was thrown into a global war the rest of the world didn’t know existed.

Now Matt’s sixteen and the war has cost him more than he ever thought it would. He’s also learned that the knife-spirits have an agenda he doesn’t totally agree with. The only problem? The spirits have the upper hand, and they plan to control the fight—and Matt.

Then things get worse: the next lunar eclipse cycle is starting, a prominent physicist has gone missing, and Matt’s best friend is thinking about quitting the team. If he loses Will—after everyone else he’s lost—Matt’s not sure how he’ll fight alone.

As the source of his nightmares starts to creep out of the shadows, Matt knows he’ll need all the help he can get…because being alone could prove deadly.

Matt Archer: Blade's Edge

When Matt Archer was fourteen, he discovered monsters are real. As if that wasn’t enough to go on for a few decades, Matt also found out that he’d been chosen to hunt those monsters--with a sentient, supernatural knife. Now fifteen, Matt has spent the last year working with a clandestine military unit, trying to rid the world of monsters, demons and other vicious creatures, all while keeping it a secret from nearly everyone he knows back home in Billings.

Including his mom.

Add in a new girlfriend, family secrets, sibling drama and enough homework to sink an aircraft carrier, and Matt’s life has become more complicated than he ever imagined. Worse, the knife has developed some very definite opinions about Matt’s personal life and it interferes in his business whenever it wants. More and more, Matt’s coming to realize that sharing brain-space with a spirit kind of sucks.

When stories of decimated towns and hordes of zombies start pouring into the Pentagon from Afghanistan, Matt knows he’ll be called up soon. Between the new mission and the knife’s increasing control over his mind, Matt wonders if he’ll survive long enough to take his driver’s exam.

Matt Archer: Monster Hunter

Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer spends his days studying Algebra, hanging out with his best friend and crushing on the Goddess of Greenhill High, Ella Mitchell. To be honest, he thinks his life is pretty lame until he discovers something terrifying on a weekend camping trip at the local state park.

Monsters are real. And living in his backyard.

But that's not the half of it. After Matt is forced to kill a strange creature to save his uncle, he finds out that the weird knife he took from his uncle's bag has a secret, one that will change Matt's life. The knife was designed with one purpose: to hunt monsters. And it's chosen Matt as its wielder.

Now Matt's part of a world he didn't know existed, working with a covert military unit dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares. Faced with a prophecy about a looming dark war, Matt soon realizes his upcoming Algebra test is the least of his worries.

His new double life leaves Matt wondering which is tougher: hunting monsters or asking Ella Mitchell for a date?

Teaser

When Cannon’s lips parted, sending his tongue to meet with mine, I thought I was going to faint. Without a beating heart, without a chest to heave with heavy breaths, my body tingled instead, sending wave after wave of sweet shivers throughout my entire being.

His hands were warm against my back, the dewy skin of his face hot against mine when his lips left their mark to kiss my neck just below my ear. I tilted my head, sending a cascade of chestnut locks against my wings.

“Ashley, you have no idea how much I want you right now – all of you.” Cannon’s voice was deeper than a whisper but soft, muffled against the inside collar of my robe.

“I want you too, Cannon.” I said without the inconvenience or interruption of having to catch my breath between kisses.

As our kissing continued, Cannon’s grip upon me became heavier and desperate. I pulled him closer in return, wanting him to press hard against me, giving in to our emotions. My wings were tight, aching against my back. Cannon’s wings were firm, pulsing as his muscles flexed.
