Blood Purple
Thanks to author Ashley Nemers for stopping by the Cotton Patch on her tour and giving us this great guest post and excerpt from her book Blood Purple
Religion and Vampires…Does this go together? I’ve always wondered how vampires can celebrate the human holidays. They aren’t human and they certainly don’t believe in the same things humans do. I don’t think I will ever understand how people justify it. It’s because of this little hang up of mine that you will not see my vampires celebrate religious holidays like humans. But also to add, my vampire world has a different religious element all together.
How I write is pretty simple, I take what I observe in reality and expand on it. Real life religions and governments fight about evolution vs creationism. It’s going to be a constant battle for duration of America’s life I believe. Not that I believe one side is right and one side is wrong mind you, I just think it’s foolish to limit knowledge and exposure. Why not teach both? But I digress…In Blood Purple I’ve created their own world where there is a little bit of creationism and a little bit of evolution.
The Algula’s were created by an alien race. They came to earth and molded the Algula. The firsts of this creation are the Royal Bloodline, their ancestors. After the Algula’s gained proper control of their powers they created humans, in their image. They granted a few humans with some extraordinary abilities. This is what the humans built their religion on; their profits and God were creations of the original Algula.
Yes this all sounds wild and crazy, it is meant to be. I did not want to create a world that everyone had heard of before. I wanted my own set of rules my own history and my own beliefs.
I encourage you to pick up Blood Purple and read it. You will be transported to a world unlike any you have seen before. The good guys will have to do bad things; the bad guys will gain sympathy and fans. Because in real life, the people who do well in life are forced to make bad decisions and the people who do bad, well sometimes they end up loved. History has a crazy way of doing that, looking back and seeing that someone who was cherished at one point is realized to be someone they are not.
So in my Algula vampire world that is what you will find…the unexpected.
In a world we think we know, live other races entirely hidden from the mortal perspective. Creatures of legend, of fable and myth, their very history and nature have allowed them to walk side by side with humans since time immemorial. They are warriors, they are hunters, and they are Algula Vampire. And in their own midst, a battle is brewing for supremacy, for dominance, that can and will affect all around them. Old hatred never dies and vengeance is a fiery sword that cuts a bloody swath.
Excerpt
Nikole took his left hand in her left hand as she felt his body come behind her and his right hand brace her right elbow. She looked over her shoulder back to him and began to talk but he interrupted her. “I just don’t want you to fall; you can do all the work just think of me as a brace.” Smiling at him she nodded a bit before looking back to the door. She moved her right foot and slowly started to take her first steps out of the room. Alec barley held onto her as she crossed the fifteen feet from the bed to the door. As they walked out of the bedroom, she looked at his living room and kitchen. She was blown away by the design.
“Did you build this place? It’s amazing.” She loved how the loveseat sat facing a huge picture window, displaying a view of the lake. The woodwork and carpet coordinated, making the rays of sun fill the home with warmth and light. The natural coloring, the light shades of tan and brown mixed over the cream walls. They made their way to the sofa. Alec helped her sit down on it. Her hands ran over the light brown leather. She had a hard time absorbing the sight of everything. “Alec this place…it’s fascinating.” He sat down beside her, watching her take in the different things around the room.
“I built this place in 1975 shortly after I bought this land from your brother. I’ve slowly upgraded it with the decades as more modern items become available but it’s my sanctuary, it’s off in the distance not easily found by people. It is…” he paused and exhaled slowly, thinking he needed to choose his words carefully. “It is the only thing I have left in this world that is worth caring about. I lost everything when we all migrated to the states. So this is where I hideout and keep to myself.”
She knew how he felt, she had lost everything too. Moving her hand over to his and grasping it, she gave him a look and softly said, “I am sorry my uncle took everything from you. You have been so generous to help me. Can I repay you somehow?”
He shook his head looking at her; he didn’t understand why he cared so much. “No, but thank you.” He ran his finger over to her cheek and brushed her soft skin. Moments passed, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. Did he take her home or keep her? There was just something about her that made him boil inside and want to burst with joy. He didn’t understand what it was. He didn’t even know her.
