The 1980’s Datsun bucked and sputtered as Zo slowed and then parked the car. “It’s not the greatest, but neither was my van.”

Claire gave a sympathetic smile. “That Max guy is so nice letting you borrow it today. I just hope it doesn’t keel over while we’re using it.”

“True that.”

In the distance to their left, was an old and rusty industrial location. To their right were acres of overgrown wilderness. There was a tall, black iron gate sitting a few feet away, guarding the overgrowth. They walked to the gate along a cracked and uneven sidewalk, watching their step along the way.

Claire craned her neck to look up to the top of the rust-speckled barrier. Nothing else was in sight but the monstrous gate and chaotic green growth. She was not feeling optimistic, but decided to try to look like whatever her mom wanted to show her was wonderful in some sort of way.

“Surprise!” Zo smiled with great energy.

“You bought Stephen King’s fence?”

“Well, and a bit of land.”

“How much land was that again?”

“Approximately eighty acres. It is described as a hill.”

Claire couldn’t hold back the look of feeling further disappointment, as her eyebrows raised and her lips stayed zipped tightly.

“Oh, now settle down. This is exciting. I haven’t even tromped through this land yet. You and I together will be the very first time. That is why I told you to wear long pants and sturdy shoes.”

“You don’t even know what it all looks like? Mother? This is on the east side of the river: the downtrodden, worse than ghetto, poor and unkempt area. Nobody ever has reason to travel to this side of town. It’s a ‘no no.’ There are even horrible urban ghost stories about this area.” So much for the “wonderful” pretense. She immediately felt guilt wash over her, knowing that Penny and the others already did a thorough job of making her mother feel miserable.

“Yes, I admit, I have heard those stories, too. And I do believe in ghosts, but I thought you didn’t, my dear.”

Claire cocked her head. “You’re right. I don’t, but—” She stopped herself, not wanting any more regrets.

Zo unzipped a compartment to her faux-snakeskin purse to reveal an old, large key. “This is it, Claire. Let’s have some fun.”

My first novel, Just Ella, took me many years to write because I wanted it to be more than just a cutesy love story. I wanted it to have depth, to feel genuine. Hopefully I succeeded, but you’ll have to be the judge.

“Why not?” I should have said something cleverer, but I felt a bit scatterbrained, all thoughts having fled when Gavin’s arm went around me.

He made a noise of exasperation. “Why not, she asks. Because, Princess, what’s going to happen when you show up for your lessons completely drenched? Or, what happens when we both show up on the palace grounds completely drenched? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to explain that to anybody.”

Unfortunately, he had a point. “Don’t call me Princess.” He had been so relaxed today, so willing to be himself and let me be myself. I hated that he felt the need to remind me of my rank. I was tempted to be angry and walk away but I also wanted to see how long he would keep his arms around me. Simply out of curiosity, of course.

I was born in Utah, but grew up in Flagstaff Arizona and St. Louis Missouri, the fifth of seven children. I attended college at Southern Virginia University and Brigham Young University where I studied English and Theater. I now live in Idaho with my husband and four children.




I have Charlotte Bronte to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to sacrifice what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but it the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it.




I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

As soon as she stepped outside, the heat was forgotten due to the amazing smells coming from the two Dutch ovens. One had chicken and the other a potato type casserole. Sadie had to swallow in order to keep her enthusiasm in check. Really, her food obsessions were a bit out of hand.

“This is wonderful,” Sadie said after Paul slid into his seat at the head of the table. She’d already enjoyed a few bites of both the chicken and the potatoes. They were both delicious.

Paul grinned his appreciation for the compliment but said nothing, probably because his mouth was full. She waited for him to finish before asking about the recipe, which he said he’d be happy to share. Sadie would have to buy a Dutch oven and make it for Pete sometime. Maybe after they were married. “Oh, I forgot the rolls.” Tess jumped up and headed for the kitchen, returning seconds later with a basket of rolls that completed the meal perfectly. Tess also put a small bowl of what looked like strawberry cream cheese in the center of the table.

“When we got married Paul’s mom gave me a whole cook book full of her families favorite recipes including this one,” Tess explained as she returned to her seat. “It’s from a restaurant called Maddox in Northern Utah—that’s where Paul’s from. They’re especially good with raspberry butter.”

Raspberry butter, not strawberry cream cheese.

Sadie was happy to give the rolls a sampling and spread both halves with a generous helping of the raspberry butter. “These are delicious,” Sadie said one bite later. “Is it a batter roll?” The roll was so light it couldn’t possibly be from a traditional kneaded dough.

“It is a batter roll. They’re my go-to roll recipe—so easy to whip up and so good. I’m glad you like them.”

The toad puffed out his chest, emphasizing the yellow and brown streaks across it. “I’m Mozzy. Named after my favorite food, mosquitoes.” He shoved his webbed hand into hers and shook it.

“I’m Isa....” She couldn’t use her real name. It’d sound too human.  “I’m Warterella. Named after all my warts.” She flashed her warty back.

“Strange name.” Mouth parted, he stretched out his neck to admire her back, pulling loose skin folds tighter. Every time she shifted her back away from him, he’d shuffle over to inspect it. She sighed and let him study her. “Has anyone ever told you your warts are stunning?”

The thought of anyone finding warts attractive made Isabelle shudder. Unsure how to respond, for

she’d never been told that before and hoped to never again, Isabelle shifted from foot to foot. “Um, never.”

“Uh, that’s not to say that you don’t have lovely mustard-colored eyes.” He stuttered on the words. “I just think every single wart tells me something different about a toad’s character.”

Isabelle looked at him as if he were loopy. Bats squawked in the tree above, seeming to agree with her.

He pressed a wart on her shoulder. “This one here tells me you’re mending a broken heart.” His head pulled back and four chins formed. Staring at it as if he needed reading glasses, he cried, “Oops. Misread it. You’re mending something. Can’t tell what it is.”

Isabelle coughed back a whimper in her throat, and focused on the frog chorus in the background.

Mozzy wrapped his arm around her shoulder. “Now, now. Dwelling on the pain doesn’t help. And I should know. I’ve attended forty-nine funerals for family members in the last year alone. But you don’t see me crying over spilt mosquito juice.” Although his voice was surprisingly jolly for a toad delivering such tragic news, Isabelle almost fainted at those odds. Especially when her father was a major contributor to a toad's low chances of survival.

One thing you need to know about LJ Clarkson is that she tells BIG lies. She tells everyone that she gave up her career as an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager to write full time. Two percent is for research. But she's only admitting it so she doesn't end up like Boldrick. Being the frizzy-haired tomboy with buck teeth gave me a slight case of shyness as a kid. A colorful imagination meant escape and adventure at the drop of a hat.
