Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is an awesome read for a variety of reasons. This read is not only a precursor for Dracula (having predated it by about 25 years) it is also quite the opposite. Carmilla is a short, melodramatic gothic read where Dracula is quite masculine and harsh.
Carmilla comes into the life of the narrator, Laura, quite suddenly. There is a carriage accident at the schloss where Laura lives and Carmilla comes to stay with them for a short time. The relationship between Laura and Carmilla, while very subtle is also very obvious there is more than friendship here. And the horror is that the face of love is also the face of evil.
This well written gothic tale is a must read for those who enjoy vampire lore. I enjoyed it much more than Dracula.
