The Tower of the Alchemist by Aimélie Aames
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the fifth installment in the Marechal Chronicles and is quite different from the first four volumes. This doesn't mean its not as good as the others, it is quite a good story all on its own. Its more of a prequel since it tells the background story on the Marechal. There is also less of an erotic element to this one than the others.
As the story opens we are transported to the past, before the incident that made the Marechal what he is. There are also side stories that are carefully woven in. At first I wondered what some of these had to do with the story but by the end it all made sense. Some of the alchemy/physics scenes were a bit over my head with all the light refraction and lens production etc. But I found it wasn't necessary to understand the process to figure out the outcome.
Melisse comes into this part of the story very little. We find her at the end very troubled about what she must do and I look forward to see her continue with her quest in the next installment. She's my favorite character in the series and while I understand that the Marechal's story must be told I missed her.
Overall, I enjoyed it and it fit very well with the rest of the series. You definitely felt as though you were in the past of this world as his story unfolded. Love this series.
